500 Yards of Sewage.

"Andy traveled through 500 yards of poop smelling foulness I can't imagine to get to freedom" This is one of my favorite quotes from Shawshank Redemption, my movie of choice on one of our four days of travel this week. I came on this trip wanting freedom. Freedom for the people of Uganda, and freedom for myself. One thing that has become abundantly clear to me in this first week is that it won't be a walk in the park. That it will be hard, that it will nearly break me, that I will want to turn back. But the freedom that I know is promised to me will be worth every step,...

99 hours later…

We finally arrived in Lira, Uganda. I'm not going to repeat these events, just check out my other team mates blogs and you will understand the crazy adventure I have already been on. Satan has been attacking me ever since I left Texas. 2 hours before I was boarding the plane, I found of a very good friend of mine from home had passed away. And along with the "adventure" we went on. Regardless to all that, God is SO faithful. He has proven to me over and over again He knows what He is doing. My team is a team of champions! We are all so different and unique, but each bring...

What to expect when expecting

Coming into training camp I had an idea in my head of what I thought it was going to be like. It’s the same in life..we always have expectations for things even if we don’t mean to. Sometimes we even tend to get angry when our expectations aren’t met. When we focus on our unmet expectations we miss the other opportunities the Lord has for us. As Americans we tend to become comfortable with our rights…we always feel like we have a right to everything. Example: personal space. Pretty much everyone would agree that sometimes we need our bubble of space. Am I right? But...

This is not Brentwood

I have been gone for just over a week and I miss the comforts of my home. I miss my family, my friends, food anytime I want, and especially HOT SHOWERS! But even though I miss all that, there’s not a place in the entire world I would rather be. I love this place, and yesterday was just my first day in Lira. I can’t wait to see what God has in store for the rest of our trip.   We have experienced 16 hours on a plane, 5 hours waiting at a bus station, and over 31 hours of bus travel on roads that would send you flying out of your seat every few seconds. But my personal...

We Made It!

Coming into training camp, I had no idea what to expect. Needless to say, I did not anticipate that immediately upon arrival, we would be asked to leave all but three items of our choice to get us through the night while we slept on a tarp under the stars. After the first night, they graciously gave us our belongings back. This, along with all of the other experiences at training camp had the purpose of preparing us for our trip. During the four days at camp, I played in a lot of red clay, had some amazing conversations with God while walking through the tall Georgia pines, and...

Month 9 1/2.

Kenya: September – November 2010. Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania: January – May 2012. Uganda: August – December 2012.   If you would have told me that two years ago I’d be spending a total of 12ish out of the next 24 months in East Africa I would have laughed. But here I am again, back in East Africa for the third time since I left my precious bubble in September 2010. I guess the joke is on me! Although I would have laughed a couple years ago at the thought of all of this, I can’t picture my life any other way. You know how you get that feeling some place and...
