Debrief (and cheese!)

Spending a week (or five days, whatever) in Nairobi for debrief was awesome.  It was great to meet up again with Team Kenya.  We hadn’t seen them since training camp, and honestly I’d forgotten some of their names.  But, it was great to see the way God had been moving in their team.  We listened to their stories, and they were eager to hear ours, especially because they are going to Busia, where we’d been for the past six weeks.  Our team dynamics are a lot different—team Kenya is definitely a lot more outgoing, whereas our team is a lot more...

Debrief

To all friends, family, and supporters, your participants are doing very well and know that you have every reason to be proud of the men and women they are becoming. We left Kenya very encouraged! We wanted to share some photos from our time in Nairobi so you can see how your participants have changed. For the parents of Zach Hanna and Micah Duke, your sons are having a beard competition, though it might be time to shave.

Behind the Green Gate

There has been a man named Victor whom I have seen around lately. My first contact with him was on the way to lunch hour. I heard, “Chelsea! Chelsea! Who is Chelsea?” I looked, laughed and said, “I am.” He then starts shouting, “Go team Chelsea.” Pretty typical when people learn my name, but how did he know my name? This was about four weeks back. A week and a half ago we were sitting outside our gate to our home and here comes Victor walking down the road asking, “Where is Chelsea?” I said, “I am here.” He asked for us to come to...

Becky: Standing in the Face of Adversity

Ephesians 6:12-13 – “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything to stand.”               In Africa, you can hear the Muslim prayers over the loud speaker throughout the day. It’s always such an eerie thing to...

Indiana, and Ugali

I spend a lot of time comparing Kenya with Indiana.  It’s easy to find differences here: pop comes in bottles, things run on “Africa time,” where two hours late is on time, power and internet connections only work some of the time, bananas cost five shillings (about 7 cents), church services last four hours, my main form of transportation other than walking involves sitting sideways on a boda boda (bicycle), and as I walk down the street, small children yell, “MZUNGUHOWAREYOUIAMFINE!” It’s a little different than Indiana.  Recently, I saw...
