The Great Commission

Towards the beginning of this trip, I met a 16 year old girl named Evaline. She and two of her sisters own a tiny hair salon in Lira. As I spent some time with Eva, I came to know here story. At age seven she lost her mother, and at age twelve, she became an orphan when her father died. Until recently, she lived in an orphanage, and now she lives with some of her sisters. What is so touching and encouraging to me is not the fact that she is an orphan who is persevering to support herself and her sisters, but that she is so hungry for the Word of God. Eva told us that she had been praying...

Just like us

On Thurday nights at the Kyampisi church, our team leads a Bible study for the children. When looking back on many of the Bible stories I was taught in Sunday school, I was in awe of how a small boy named David killed the giant Goliath, how Joshua prayed the sun would stand still so he would win a battle that God promised victory over, and how Elijah prayed that the rain would stop for three years to show they power of his God. I can easily get caught up in lies that only these "great Bible characters" can have enough faith for these events to happen. But, we have the same God who...

Deeper Places

"Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near." Isaiah 55:6 Soaking in the presence of God can be quite addicting. In the moments that are most dense with God's love, we experience healing, we are restored, we are transformed, we are sanctified. But these moments never look the same. Maybe that is simply God showing off his creativity; nevertheless, every encounter with Jesus is unique and perfectly designed to bring him glory. This love is found in the moments in which we accept son or daughterhood and we trust that God really does care, yet it is...

For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these Children

Well I made it safely to Lira, Uganda! 🙂 After a 20 hour flight and a 6 hour bus ride we made it here a little over a 3 weeks ago. Everything went so smoothly. I have to say, looking back now it's funny that I had so much anxiety about the process of getting here.  Actually I was thinking on the way to our hotel that it's funny that I had anxiety about this trip at all. God is good, and He is always faithful and He keeps revealing that to me over and over again. I love this country. Ever since I entered, I have never felt more welcomed or more like a celebrity. haha There is...

Back to the Heart of Worship

Last Sunday half of our team went to a service at a church called Victory Outreach Church North. After watching this congregation worship, I cannot help but think we are missing something in our American churches. This church probably isn't what we picture when we think of "church." It looks more like an outdoor shelter house. In this church there are no lights, no projectors, no videos, no special effects. They have a basic sound system with two small speakers. But they certainly are not lacking in passion. I have never heard "Lord I Lift Your Name on High" sung...

all because of love. love. love. love. love.

I had never been to a prison before, never mind a Ugandan prison. So I really had no idea of what to expect. I kept trying to picture our ministry there as we waited to be let in the little door with a small lock on it. When we walked through the door, there was just an open dirt courtyard where men in yellow prison garb milled around.  From there we went into an open concrete room packed full of more men. They cleared some wooden benches for us and we joined some other people from the church who were also there to minister to the men. They had us introduce ourselves and say why we...
