a blog so good it doesn’t need a title

Last Wednesday on our day off I took a day trip to Gulu – a slightly larger city about 2 hours northwest – with Jordan, Darby, Aly, Logan and Carrie-Anne.  We spent the day with our Ugandan friend, Collines, who is a student at Gulu University, was a roadie for Invisible Children in the U.S., and now works with the Invisible Children office in Gulu.  We toured the Invisible Children offices and it was neat getting to see what IC is doing to help repair the damage done by the LRA.  In IC’s Schools for Schools program we learned about the re-building of...

When the going gets tough, Jesus’ grace gets going

Wow! I cannot believe it! We are down to the last wire of our trip. Two weeks left in Lira, ½ a week in Jinja, then 3 days of traveling and Georgia and I will be home. The last four months have literally flown by. It is such a bittersweet feeling for me. Lira has truly become home for me, but I am also super excited to see all my family and friends whom I miss so, so much.   Anyways, as you saw the title of this blog is when the going gets tough, God’s grace gets going. I want to explain, I know God’s grace is always working and never ending. What I am specifically...

4….3….2….1…. Finish!

4….3…..2…..1…. Finish!   Hey everyone! So this week I want to blog about 4 things because they are all standing out in my mind.   4. I will start with Easter weekend here in Lira. Friday through Sunday this week past week was a crazy busy time. It reminded me much of my church at home. We had a Good Friday service, time to chill on Saturday, then Sunday service. My team and I worked on 4 songs that we sang for the Good Friday service, such an awesome time of worship! And one of the girls painted a picture while we sang. It was a great time of worship and...

Stitches, Skits, and Salvation!

Well, the good news is that I have officially crossed being a nurse off of my list of possible occupations that I could have in my life. The bad news is that I had to give a poor innocent African man stitches in his hand in order to figure that out. So here’s the story, last week Dr. Henry had told me that I could help assist him in surgery the next time I was at the hospital. However, last Monday, there were no surgeries occurring because it was a holiday. Then as I was visiting patients in the male surgical ward, Dr. Henry...

I’m a Streetwalker

I'm a Streetwalker… Yup. It's true. I am writing to let you all know that I am a streetwalker. There is an organization that we are volunteering with called Child Restoration Outreach (CRO). It is a NGO for street children that feeds them one hot meal a day, provides them a place to bathe and wash their clothes, and offers Christian counseling to the children in the hopes of reconciling them to their families (in cases where they actually have a family, which some of them do not). Yesterday was my team's day to volunteer there and we chose to arrive early so we could walk...

Esther Smiles

When I walked into the therapeutic feeding center at the hospital, I didn't really expect to be affected like I was. Ally and I were quickly greeted by a little boy named Moses. He waddled towards us and he immediately laid his head on Ally's lap. He is the most cuddly little boy ever but also quite a handful. He hates when we put him down and is very stubborn, but still so precious. As we walked into the room where all the children were, my eyes quickly focused on the girl in the second bed. I went over to meet her and she said her name was Esther. My...
