a blog so good it doesn’t need a title

Last Wednesday on our day off I took a day trip to Gulu – a slightly larger city about 2 hours northwest – with Jordan, Darby, Aly, Logan and Carrie-Anne.  We spent the day with our Ugandan friend, Collines, who is a student at Gulu University, was a roadie for Invisible Children in the U.S., and now works with the Invisible Children office in Gulu.  We toured the Invisible Children offices and it was neat getting to see what IC is doing to help repair the damage done by the LRA.  In IC’s Schools for Schools program we learned about the re-building of...

Be Free

If you know me, you most likely know that while my birth certificate says I am 19 years old I'm a lot closer to 5 years old. I like to play, laugh, sing, dance, climb, jump, ect. This week was the perfect week for a 5 year old- the rain came. Now, to most people that would be annoying- you have to walk through rain and mud where ever you go (not to mention all the bugs). But to me, it is the most wonderful thing! I love the coolness. I love the sound it makes on my tin roof. I love listening to the thunder and watch the lightning light up the sky. I love to play. Something you should...

“Please turn your head and cough” …yep.

Haha. Ha. Ok. So this past week has been filled with great and exciting things 😀 I’m not really good with social boundaries… I typically act wildly offensive because I don’t really know when a joke has gone too far, and at times have difficulty understanding the concept of “TMI”.  So if this entry is semi inappropriate…apologies.  But it’s too entertaining…at least to me…not to share.   So last Friday, Mary and I found Dr. Henry who works at the hospital we visit and who knows we’re going to nursing school...

Freely you have recieved, freely you give

Something I've noticed in my life is the vast majority of things I see. I see beautiful things- I see children's smiles when I wave to them, I see Zebras, I see baby giraffes licking my face, I see the sun rise over the mountains in Kenya, I see my team mates laughing until we cry. I also see tragic things- I see sickness, I see poverty, I see hopelessness, I see pain, and I see grief. This week I've spent time doing both. I would like to take this blog post to tell you the story of a little boy named Aroke Dennis and how God is continuing to redeem my past, even here in...

Solidarity

Last night we had the incredible privilege of being there for the first part of this: http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/world/2012/03/14/pkg-mckenzie-kony-2012-screening-in-uganda.cnn It was amazing. Sitting on top of a pickup truck, surrounded by thousands of Ugandans as they watch a documentary about the atrocities that have happened to them; to their friends; to their neighbors. It's one thing to watch Kony 2012 in your bedroom, and another to be standing next to a guy who had been abducted by the LRA. Who knows how many other stories there were in that crowd. We only were there for...

The Best Days of My Life!

Welp folks, this is a double blog week. Last week I didn't have time to blog because the power was out and we only had about an hour of internet (and it was very slow). This is Africa folks! This week is what I have deemed the "week of growth". It started with last Tuesday. Last Tuesday my team asked if I would play guitar and lead worship for them. I've been learning guitar off and on for years, but I've never really been dedicated to it. I was not really excited to play for them, but I did pray earlier that week that I would have the opportunity to practice playing...
