“You’re half Mzungu half China!” -The Real One.

It seems the people of africa are better at recognizing asians than in San Antonio. Just sayin. Also..I accidentally posted this as Aly earlier..so disregard her post that has the same title 🙂  I keep hearing that people are reading my blog. I appreciate all of you letting me know because otherwise I would have very little motivation to actually write every week. SO thanks :D.  I think we're pretty much almost settled in to life here in Lira. Accepting the fact that Africa does crazy things to your feet and aware that they might never return to a normal hue again....

I’ve Fallen In Love

I’ve fallen in love…   …with sweat dripping down my brow. …with only showering when necessary, not wanted. …with pushing myself till I am about to drop from exhaustion. …with dirt in my eyes, mouth, and the crevasse I didn’t know I had. …with wearing my clothes multiple days in a row, and no one caring.   I’ve fallen in love… …with the little dirty feet of the children.  …with the sound of joyous laughter at every face I make and every word I pronounce incorrectly. …with their warm welcome...

I Can Never Think of Titles!

The internet connection has been…trying…today so I don't have much time to write but here goes: One of the many things God has been teaching me during these past two weeks (cannot believe it has only been two weeks- it feels like we've lived here for months) is an incredible tolerance- or even an enjoyment- or things that would normally really annoy me. Such as… -Kids accidentally pouring my whole water bottle into my backpack. My poor Bible will forever wear the physical scars. -Looking, feeling and being dirty. All the time. -Never doing anything "on...

So this past week in Lira has been pretty great! On thursday we spent some time at the church talking with people and learning about HIV education. We were fed by the church ladies… rice, beans and mystery meat.. we ate with our hands and it was awesome except it didnt exactly make me feel top notch. On friday we spent some time walking around the village and we met some cool people , many of which are planning on coming to canada.. haha. Saturday we rocked out at an African wedding… and we were also the center of attention for about 5 minutes. When we walked into the...

Hiding sweet potatoes in purses

so. just sitting at the internet cafe drinking a coffee milkshake…trying to find the desire to write about something. Eating dairy products here is always a bit of an adrenalin rush, since you never know exactly how you'll feel afterwards, but ice cream is worth the risk and i've always liked living life on the edge. There are a lot of things you never realize you miss till they're gone…like ice. and broccoli. This second week has been a bit harder getting acclimated as we finally realize we'll be here for 4 months but it is so awesome getting to know the people...

An Immense Need….Broken People…. A Divine Call

The last two weeks I have been immersed in a culture where the first thing you see is the immense needs. People that work daily just to earn enough money to feed their children a single meal. Men and woman who do everything they can to send their children to school. I see orphaned children who are taking care of their younger siblings. There are children and adults missing limbs, or are sick, or starving, but they do nothing about these conditions because they do not have the money for treatment. Many children run the streets in old, tattered clothing, clothing that...
