Well its been 9 days now that we have been in Busia, Kenya. I love it. Honestly adjusting has come much more naturally than I had anticipated. So much is different from the US
Example:
Day one- we woke up to a rat in our toilet, thankfully the boys at the house are used to that happening and had no quams about getting it for us.
The showers- they are indoors, but the water is COLD ha the shower room is big so that gives me the chance to catch my breath. 😉
Sleeping- 9 girls (and our luggage) in a bedroom not larger than mine, mice and cocroaches tend to visit us as well.
Weather- NO SNOW HERE!!! It's been beautiful in the morning when I wake up its really cool outside so perfect for doing my daily devotional, and its entertaining watching all the chickens roam the yard for food.
Laundry- a tub of water, and handful of detergent, and anoher tub of clean water for rinsing, the sun takes care of the drying. =D
Food- The fruit is soo fresh and great, we hired a chef….Lucas he cooks breakfast and dinner everyday, he "sweats joy" as his friends say. We slautered our own chicken for dinner one night, and by we I mean lucas, I only picked the feathers and toes off haha.
Lighting- our room has one dim light, and the living room has a light, we loose power often though so head lights are definitely being put to good use!
Community- It is so strong here, I love the people, everywhere you go (ok some places are sketchy and I wouldn't go outside a lone…) but the people we are working with have been such a delight. They are so welcoming, and so connected to eachother, I walk to town with Lucas and ever ten feet it seems somebody is greeting him he is greating them.
Language- they speak Swahili as their first language, their tribal languages next, then English. Most adults speak English, but when they don't we have a translator available.
Faith- people are open to hearing the word of God. Its so wonderful to see, people here just can't wait to hear about God. They have a lunch church service tues-friday and church on Sunday is about 4 hours. But the energy is outstanding and the time flies, the preachers are always so passionate, and the muisic is so upbeat, can you say DANCING! My team mates laugh at my inablity to clap on rythm, but they locals have a blast teaching me steps, I'll be a pro by the end of four months.
Transportation- "Taxi" and by taxi i mean van packed full with people, or a boda boda. I try to not look at the roads while driving its CRAZY. I just got off my first boda boda ride which is a bike with a second seat and you sit in the back while the man in front pedals, right along with the cars, or against the trafic. ha its terrifying, I'll stick to walking as much as humanly possible 😉
Set schedual- What that!? TIA (This is Africa) Be ready to go on time, but don't be suprised if you leave 2 hours later than planed, that's expected.
So far the ministery has been good, the team has been bonding really well, its only been a week and we are all so close. Lacy and I stayed home one day to watch the bags and we were so excied to see everyone when they got home….transitioning to constantly being with people has actually been a joy, and everyone is so respectful of "alone time" If somebody is journaling or reading their bible or has there ipod in, their space is respected. I'm so thankful for my team, God sure new what he was doing when he put us all together! =]
Next week we are going to be doing door to door evangalism ( YIKES!) preaching and attending the lunch services, and visiting people at the local hospital and praying with them!
This past week we attended the lunch time services, and got to know the kids at a local school, and the people at church. Already we are starting to feel so conected to everyone here.
I gave my testimony at one of the local churches and the pastor translated for the yesterday, I was nervours, and definitely not excited to share my story, as its not something I'm proud of, but the pastor and everyone loved it. The pastor told me how inspiring the story was, and that it showed the people how much God can change a person's life around. So I'm glad I did it.
So I know this is excessively long, and I appoligize and my camera was lost or stolen so I can't post pictures until my team puts some of theres on FB I just wanted everyone back home to know that things are goind well, we are safe, happy, and healthy. Getting into the groove of things is going smoothly. There is so much more I could ramble on about bud don't worry I'm ending now by saying I love you all dearly <3
PEACE
