Ivan The Great

Deep in the heart of Lira's main hospital lives a pre-teen boy named Ivan. Entering the tuberculosis ward, Ivan resembles nothing more than a pile of bones stacked neatly up on the floor. In fact, at first glance Ivan is so small, you probably wouldn't even notice he was in the room. Ivan is now succumbing to tuberculosis, HIV, and meningitis. A two month hospital stay is all that divides him from his former life of happiness and health; of running and kicking balls, playing in the mud, and helping around the house. His withered grandmother hoists him up onto the bed so I can get a...

Lira Prisons

My favorite ministry, in Lira, is visiting the prisons. Yesterday we got to visit the female prison. Compared to a prison in the USA, there is hardly any security. Some of the prisoners even get to leave to go to the market or to the hospital when they are sick. It seems like it would be so easy to just run away. If women come to prison when they are pregnant or have really little ones, they are allowed to keep the children with them, while they serve their time.     We got invited to go by a friend of mine, Betty. Our team was at the hospital one day, praying for the...

Day to Day in Lira

Our contact has a very large church and many different ministries to choose from. So we are fortunate, that we get to work in the departments, that match the calling of our hearts. Here is a run-down of what our team has been doing so far this month: In the A.M.- Some of our team goes to work at the Compassion International office. The rest of our team does personal evangelism time. Most of us stay at the hotel (where we are fortunate to stay this month) and help the staff. There is MUCH cooking, dishes, laundry, and cleaning of rooms that needs to be done. It is all done by hand and it is...

Even Through Paperwork

We made it to Lira and have been in ministry for two weeks now. When we met our contact, Pastor Johnson Ogema, he told us about ten different ministries we could get involved in. We were excited to hear how busy we would be. So for the past two weeks we have been “working” with these different ministries. The thing is that in African culture, they see us as guests and want to serve us. Therefore we don’t feel like we are serving much. But here’s the thing… we have the option of how we want to look at the situation. We can say we really don’t have a...

The Storm

Darkness hovering over me. Lightning illuminating the depths of the clouds. Bats being enticed by the gloom, Flying into the abyss to get a closer look. Should I fear what I see? Should I fear the shadows lurking all around me?   I stare into the face of the storm, and I see beauty. I see hands that created such splendor.  The lightning shows me Glory sitting on a throne,  looking down on me with love-sick eyes. He is a safe place…a refuge.   In the midst of adversity, my heart beats uncontrollably for the King. Darkness has no hold on...

Honeymoon

Ever since we crossed the border, Uganda has been different.  It's homey.  It's where we were supposed to be all along.  With more than half of the trip down and only 58 days to go, I can already recognize that this time has been priceless.  Jesus has been revealing Himself in ways that He never has before.  He's been romancing and pursuing me like crazy these past two months.  And that is why I think of this time as my honeymoon with Jesus.  One hundred and twenty-one days of falling more and more in love with Jesus as He continues to show me...
