Three Cheers For Something Different!

Hello! Guten Tag! Servus! Dobre den! Hola! And of course, from the local language of Lira, APOIO!!!!   I love languages. Maybe not enough to become a linguist, but they still intrigue me. Luo, which is Lira and much of northern Uganda’s language, is completely different than any language I’ve tried to learn. I have no idea how the grammar works, but their greetings alone are crazy. “Apoio” is the most common greeting, which actually means thank you. Then they return the greeting with “Aber” which means fine or good. What would that look like in...

I’ve Been in Prison

So, about 4-5 years ago, my mom, a friend and I were camping. Late our first night, my mom jokingly said, "Jalin, I'm so tired, you might have to drive home on Sunday." "But I don't want to go to jail, yet." I said. Yep, I said, "yet" like I was planning on going to jail at some point in my life. Like I said it was late at night, and we all were extremly tired, I really didn't mean to say it. On Sundays we plan to be part of the prison misistry. The first two weeks our plans were foiled, but that's Africa for you. Last week was our first...

Stripped Away

Nothing here is familiar, not even to the eye Everything is changing, people are asking why Prices are soaring HIV is roaring Comfort is being stripped away   Nothing is the same as two short years ago Things are looking up from when they were so low Confidence is rising Unity is uprising            Fear is being stripped away   To say God’s not moving would be a big lie In order for us to have freedom, Christ had to die People are learning Restoration is returning Pain is being stripped away   Hate is being...

Wild Flowers

Lately, I have found myself looking back to a year ago and remembering who I was. I am shocked by how God has totally transformed my life. The girl that walked into training camp right before flying out of Atlanta to Kenya is nowhere to be found. I have been made new! I have heard my daddy's voice tell me who I am. I still can't stop singing about how he spoke to the chains I was in and watching them fall off my feet. Finally free from religion and from the lies that satan had been whispering into my ear. God has spoken and I now know who I am. A couple of days ago I had a...

Children of God

One of are many ministries here in Lira, Uganda is visiting primary school children. These children have taught so much in what little time I've spent with them. The children here have a know and love the fact the the Lord is their father. One child in particular that grips my heart is a 13 year old named Daphanie Kia.        Daphanie has a heart for Christ and loves to worship and learn more about him. She loves to asks me questions about the U.S. and answers my questions about Uganda. I really enjoy talking to her, and I have a strong...

Uganda Is Beautiful Again

Dear bloggies-   Week three in Uganda and all is well!  I’ve been having so much fun with everything going on here- playing with the children is probably one of my favorite things, but it’s always nice to get to break from the small ones jumping on you.  Today I had a nice break from children when I went to meet the woman who runs the microfinance office in the church we work with.  Her name is Doreen, and she has amazing insight into God and his heart, and her faith is unshakeable.   When I met with Doreen this morning, I was a little unsure of how our...
