The time I puked out the African bus

Here I am… I’m in Kenya. I’m chilling in a cool backpacking hostel. I feel great, relaxed, and comfortable…. So it’s really hard to believe that just two days ago my life was drastically different…   At two pm Friday afternoon my team and I left our home in Lira, Uganda to walk to the bus station, so that we could travel 16 hours to Nairobi, Kenya. Excited, clean, and well rested we set out with our backpacks and water bottles. We were ready for our spring break, as we like to call it, weekend in Kenya. At least we thought…   Upon...

Nairobi!

Greetings from Nairobi, Kenya!  We’re here until the 28th for a few days of team debrief where we spend time with other Passport teams in East Africa and have time to rest and reflect.  On Friday afternoon we packed up some of our belongings and walked to the bus stop in Lira, Uganda to hop on board the bus for what would become a 20 hour adventure.  We boarded the bus to discover that there weren’t quite enough seats for our group of 13 so a few of us spent time lying down in the aisle.  After around 6 hours we made it to the border where we spent two...

“You’re the big mama!”

Once again it has been an amazing week here in Uganda! Something I've learned about living in a third world country; the highs are high and the lows are low. I could sit here and tell you about the low times, the times of sadness, disappointment, loneliness, ect. But the truth is, talking about them and dwelling on them, won't change anything. So instead I want to share with you a few of the highs! High number one came in the form of a road trip. In case you don't know- I LOVE roadtrips! There is just something about driving down the road, music up and windows down! There is a...

Uganda be KIDDING me!!

This past weekend, my team and I went to Amolitar. We stayed there from Thursday to Sunday, and it was a chance to truly experience African village life. I spent the weekend living in a mud hut with 6 others on my team. It was an adventure! Spending four days in an African village is a little like camping to me. I love camping for a weekend, but after that, I am over it. There was no running water in the village whatsoever, so we had to use a squatty potty for the four days we were there. I was fine with the whole squatty situation until the joint became infested...

“This is the worst part of being a doctor”

That isn't the most comforting sstatement when you're the one wearing the gloves. Dr. Henry asked for my left hand so he could aapply the lube. He then instructed me to scoop the lube with my right hand pointer finger. The 98 year old African man laying on the bed had no teeth in his mouth and a blank stare on his face. He had prostate cancer. As soon as he walked into the hospital Dr. Henry recognized him. He was laying on the table, pantless, waiting for  me to perform a rectal exam. It was possiblly the most awkward thing I have ever experienced. I'm not going to lie it...

Africa is warm.

Hello.   This has been a week of “taking one for the team” manifesting itself in the form of eating lots and lots of food to spare the feelings of sweet Africans. Interactions typically go something like this: “Ah! You do not like posho?” “Oh…no…It’s delicious…I love posho…” “Ah! Why you no eat?? You want to eat??” “Oh…anyone want some more posho? :D” *rest of the team averts eye contact* Cool guys. “First you eat. Your stomach will be big like mine when you go back to...
