So life in the village was… interesting! Well really it was a great weekend, but full of quirks! We slept in mud huts, killed chickens, used squatty potty's and bucket showers!! Ok so I didn't kill the chicken, but some of my teammates did 🙂 Also not to forget, Poor Somer, who had Malaria the whole weekend! She was a trooper though and is doing much better!
We got to our huts late Thursday night and met Pastor Charles and his wife Scovia whom were the sweet people that let us stay at their home. They fed us a great dinner before we headed to bed. Right before bed, several people came riding in on bikes with thin mattresses on their heads for us to sleep on. So this isn't what we were expecting but I took the blessing of not having to sleep on the mud floor!
Friday morning started off on a great note.. ok, not so much. I went to use the dreaded squatty potty (aka hole in the ground), as I stepped over the hole, I guess i stepped on a weak area of ground and it slightly fell in, and off came my shoe.. I looked down the 3 foot drop into the ground, and sure enough, my croc flip flop was chilling down there with everything else that goes in a squatty! i laughed about it at the time, because the squatty literally ate my shoe, but i am a little bummed considering they were the main shoes I have been wearing here! So that was a great start to the day, i thought I was going to be a true african with no shoes for the weekend, but thankfully Carrie Anne had brought an extra pair!
We hung out at the huts most the day until about 3pm when we headed to a nearby lake! We took bota botas to the lake (motorcycle taxis), and arrived at the lake (which was much bigger than expected). There was interesting characters at the lake, lots of drunk men who insisted we should marry them haha. We didn't stay too long at the lake because we had to head to a nearby school. The bota ride back was very dusty, and we all got to the school with crazy dirt tans all over our faces and bodies. We sang a few songs with the children at the school and headed back to our temporary home for the weekend.
Saturday we went to an introduction for our friends Sam & Doreen. An Introduction is basically an engagement party, but set up almost like a wedding. There was tents with drapes, an aisle, and a meal to end off the day. It was a fun experience and we were happy to be a part of it. We love Sam & Doreen and we are so excited for their wedding!
Sunday was our final day in Amolitaar. We went to church for a long 3 hour service, ate lunch, and headed home on the long journey back to Alpha Hotel. We enjoyed our time in Amolitaar but were ready to go back to our home here. We were greeted by all the ladies that work at the hotel whom have become our good friends. I hate to even think about leaving them, they are the sweetest people ever. I will miss the amazing meals they cook, their welcome home shouts every time we come back, and the relationships we have built with these ladies!
So that was our weekend! Like I said before we are heading to kenya this week on Friday! So hopefully I will have some good Kenya stories to blog about. I'm sure the 20 hour bus ride will bring about some great stories!
