What do you have on your iPod?

Walking around a college campus, “What do you have on your iPod?” might not be the most tactful way to get to know someone, but it is something that (nearly) everyone has in common.  Everyone has an iPod that they listen to on their way to class or in their room.  It’s not something that is usually shared, so it’s personalized exactly to your music and game specifications.  Often, looking through someone’s iPod artist list can be more revealing than viewing their facebook page. All of the embarrassing guilty pleasure music you have is...

Meet Miriam

What comes to mind when you think of Africa? Perhaps a few things are tons of wildlife, mud huts everywhere, orphans on every street corner or the AIDS epidemic out of control. What else comes to your mind? Are there any specific individuals? It is difficult to be deeply moved when we think of things in mass numbers. Our minds just cannot fathom 210 MILLION orphans in the world. But when we look at the one in front of us something happens. I’d like you to meet a little girl who has touched my heart. Her name is Miriam. We were out on our morning house to house evangelism this past...

Miriam’s Broken Heart

I’ve been working with children most of my life, and I think I’ve seen it all when it comes to them being sick. From bumps and bruises to bloody noses and broken bones. From tummy aches and bug bites to diarrhea and projectile vomiting. When one of my students would come to me not feeling good I could usually diagnose the problem just by looking at them. I’d say about 98% of the time their feelings are hurt, they miss mom and dad, or they didn’t get enough sleep the night before and nap time should be sooner rather then later. I learned a fantastic tip for...

We are lights shining in the darkness. We walk in our true identities in Christ. We worship freely in Spirit and in truth.   Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is on us, because...

He is Able

Yesterday three teammates and I had the opportunity to go to Deliverance Church in Matayos to share testimonies and preach. Pastor Gideon, our contact in Busia, spoke for a bit before we were invited to speak. The structure we were in was made up of small sticks and was about the size of a typical American master bedroom. If a strong wind came through there is no doubt that this structure would topple over. There were about fifteen people attending service. Pastor Gideon spoke of how our God is a big God. He is not poor but very rich. In America we might take a lot of what they preach here...

Sound Check, 1, 2, Thank You Jesus

“Sound check, 1, 2, thank you Jesus.” This past week, the church we’re working with in Busia hosted a series of crusades in a nearby village called Matayos.  To get to Matayos, our group crammed into a van along with several other people and all of the sound equipment needed for the crusade.  Along the way, it wasn’t uncommon for us to pick up even more people who needed a ride.  Every day when we got there, the guys would construct a 30 foot tower for the speakers, so that what was going on could be heard by everyone around.  The sound...
