9. to truely love…

How is it possible to become numb to poverty when you are living amongst it everyday? At home I've been an advocate for many social injustices and for the poor. It's something I think about constantly and affects many of my decisions. Then I moved here, to Lira, Uganda for 3 1/2 months. Suddenly I'm surrounded by all the things that squeezed my heart at home. Now I'm hearing the stories that stir up righteous anger in me, yet I've become numb. I've allowed this to become "normal" to me and haven't allowed it to burden my heart like I have at home. My...

Walk in that

This week we spontaneously decided to have a "prayer walk".  As we began to walk the Lord put a thought vision in my head. I began thinking about the life of Jesus and how much he walked. I began thinking the cliche thought of "what would Jesus do." As I kept thinking about this I started to pray for his eyes, his ears, his emotions, his thoughts, and his heart. To see things as he does. As if he was right there with us physically. He began to give me the picture of him walking and coming across the lame and healing them. As I explained my thoughts...

8. zebras, elephants, & bus rides, oh my.

Wow, so much has happened since I last updated. I figured I’d share a little of our adventure to Nairobi, Kenya. We stayed in Kenya for about a week for a midpoint debrief. We met up with the Kenya and Expedition teams and a few AIM staff. It was such an amazing time! Some highlights: -eating American food at Java House! Eating salad trumped having a burger. I’ve missed having fresh vegetables. -having frozen yogurt at the mall -hot showers every day! -being cold and able to wear jeans and a hoodie for once -going to an elephant orphanage and seeing baby elephants up close...

Real stories make real changes.

“I want you to adopt one of my children.” That’s the question Meg asked me yesterday, and she was SO serious. Yesterday we went to the hospital and I got to hang out with my normal favorites Edmon, Soloman, and Sam. I sat under a tree with them for a while playing cards, and drawing. But none of them speak English so there is only so much we can do. After doing that for about an hour (plus the other hours I’ve spent doing that the other times I’ve gone there) I decided I was going to leave them under the tree for a minute and help the ladies cook in the...

Lira Sweet Lira

Last week, we had an incredible experience in Nairobi, Kenya, for our midpoint debrief. The busride there went a lot more smoothly than our initial busride–so much so that we even made it there early and on our first day we were able to go to a Nairobi mall! I cannot even recall how many tears of joy I shed that day at the sight of so many clothes, and so much ice cream and American candy. We also discovered a legitimate supermarket, complete with Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Oreos, and Nature Valley Bars. The next day in Nairobi, we went to Java House–a restaurant that we had...
