My birthday in the bush!

So this past weekend was my birthday, and i celebrated it a little differently. WE WERE IN THE BUSH. I slept in a mud hut, killed a chicken and harvested cassava. It was a great day and my team made it super awesome. On saturday we got to go to our friends introduction which was awesome, and it was cool to witness different cultural norms. Tuesday was the best day of life for me. We went to a place called child restoration outreach. I was talking to a man named fredrick, and he is a socail worker at this place. I explained to him how i was going to school for social work. I am now a social...

“Do you know Justin Bieber??”

Every Monday afternoon we split into two groups- some of us going to Fountain High School, and a few of us going to Fountain Primary (preschool- 7th grade). I have been going to the primary school, and for the first few weeks, I dreaded it. That sounds strong, but it seemed like we were just some kind of attraction for all the kids to flock to, and we had been having a hard time building relationships or feeling like we were doing anything productive there. The past two weeks, however, have been amazing and has made this school one of my favorite places to go. When I left Williamsburg and...

African Confusion

Well here in Africa, white people are referred to as either “Muzungu” or “Munu.” So everywhere we go, we hear “Munu, Bye, Munu, Bye.” Or “Muzungu, how are you”. Or something along those lines. English is the universal language here in Uganda but their English is definitely different and they often have a hard time understanding us. Small Children who are just learning are often confused as well. I think that in their schools they teach them that if a white person talks to you, they are probably going to ask you two...

There are No words to describe this feeling

"can you please take the child? I cannot provide for him. His parents are no more. Please please help me." That question, right there is what i was presented with on Tuesday evening at the hospital. My heart literally sank to my feet. Here i was, sitting on the floor with a 3 year old little boy named Brian. Suffering from an extreme case of malnutrition, every movement on my part was made with extreme care, as I was afraid I was going to break his little frail body. His lack of energy made getting him to smile very difficult… but none the less i continued to sing "in...

I spilled my malaria pills in my backpack.

The longer I go without blogging…the more overwhelming it is to blog. Too much happens here.  I love Africa. In a lot of ways I feel like I was in some ways made to be here – my very early obsession with the Lion King, an affinity for disorganization, my tendency to be incredibly laid back… disdain for personal hygiene… not that Africans aren't clean. They are exceptionally so. But this climate isn't conducive to being clean. And I'm fine with that.  God has given me so many joyful moments over the past 2 weeks. Because He's so awesome and...

My Birthday in Gulu (it’s a double blog week!)

Five thirty. Five freaking thirty. That is when my leaders and a few fellow team mates stormed into my room and woke us up on March 3rd (a.k.a. my birthday). They told us to be ready in half an hour and pack like it was any ordinary day. Confused and half asleep we all got ready to go on our mystery adventure. Turns out we were taking a trip to Gulu. Gulu is a town that a few of my team mates and myself had really wanted to visit. In Gulu there is an office for Invisible Children. If you don't know about Invisible children you probably don't know me very well. HA ok but seriously if...
