“Hold back the uterus like this…”

Hysterectomy.    I helped perform a hysterectomy (look it up, as I have no intention of describing it here). I walked into a clinic, they handed me scrubs, and told me to help out, and the next thing I know they're straight-up gutting a lady on a table in front of me. It was quite entertaining, and I think I'll be going back to the clinic twice weekly to help out heretoafter. Regardless, it was a new experience, a strange experience, and an experience I may end up reliving.    I also got pictures and video footage. Fun!    On a more...

Not sure if that’s mud on my shirt or…

This past week was one of my most emotional yet.  The more I see of this country the more my heart breaks for the need that is so evident and the more my faith is strengthened by the overwhelming joy and faith that these people have despite everything.  Driving out to a village school 3 hours away and seeing firsthand people living in conditions that make extreme poverty in the US seem comfortable I couldn't help but be angered by the unfairness that surrounds me.  I didn't understand why God brought me all the way here to get mad at him.  But then on the drive...

well, that was Lucky

Now that the "honeymoon" stage of our trip is nearing an end the reality of how far away all familiar thing are is setting in.  God has sent a little girl to help ease my home sickness and I'm SO thankful for that! Her name is Lucky and she is ten years old.  She was the first girl to come up to me on the first day at church and I have been attatched ever since.  She is my language tutor, my dance instructor, source of joy, and basically my best friend.  Weird because she is only ten years old but her maturity far exceeds her age.  I think that is...

The bend and snap works everytime!

After a week of being far away from all things familiar and comfortable it's hard to put into words everything that I'm feeling.. God has been working in so many ways and we have only been in Uganda for 7 days.  The Alpha Hotel staff goes above and beyond the normal human level of happiness, and I love it!  The other day I decided to help Susan with the laundry.  I think what was hardest to try to mimick was the insane bend that these strong African women have at their waist when working.  There is absolutely no bend of the knees it is strictly waist and...

Wild monkeys, dance parties, and road goat.

Hey everyone!  Thanks for reading again!  I love it here. Only a week has past and so much has happened already.  The last blog I posted was during training camp in Georgia – I am now in Lira, Uganda!  God showed up in an awesome way the day before we left to come to Uganda so i'd like to tell you about that.  In the afternoon, a bunch of us from the team went on a walk to the waterfalls near the college where training camp was taking place.  I happened to run into an old couple (70's) while i was walking and i started talking to them.  His...

The Crushing Weight of the Wait

We have yet to truly begin our ministry in Uganda. Although we have spent a day with children sponsored by Compassion International, gone to a Ugandan service at our host's church, and made many a new friend in the natives and in our team, we have yet to truly begin to speakto people about Christ.    Setback: I anxiously wait for our team to come together more closely. I know we are still in a more formative stage, but there are so many hearts that beat and ache and beat and ache for healing amongst us. Testimonies have laid waste to our over-romanticized...
