Momma Moses

Have you ever had an experience that words can not even come close to explaining? As you read this, please remember that I am completely overwhelmed trying to explain to you in this short blog about my experiences this past week in Kyampisi! We worked with an organization called Kyampisi Childcare Ministries (KCM) and our whole team fell completely in love- everything about this village and ministry has completely captured my heart. As I left this morning, it was painful, because I was leaving a part of my heart with these people! Everything we did from cleaning out wells to painting the schoolhouse was rewarding and the whole staff at KCM were some of the most incredible people I have ever met and the kids that they have brought into their home are the epitomy of miracles and God’s grace, their testimonies will bring tears to your eyes! I want to highly encourage you to read all of the Kampala team’s blogs this week because SO much happened and we are each trying to focus our blogs on different aspects since it is impossible to paraphrase the events of this week.

For me, my focus is Moses. This little baby has completely captured my heart, and if I could bring him home then you better believe that I would have in a heartbeat…. mom, dad… wanna baby as a souveneir? Moses is a 2 month old and 4 lb baby that KCM rescued. He is truly a miracle! Moses was born a few weeks premature. His mother died 2 weeks after he was born from AIDS leaving him with his grandmother to care for him. The family did not see Moses has a human… just as a thing that may potentially have HIV. They didn’t give him a name… they fed him black tea in his bottle… they were waiting on this precious, innocent child of God to die. When the people at KCM heard that his mother died they went to visit the family and that same day they rescued Moses. Rebecca (who is called Momma Moses) is an Australian nurse here for mission work, she said that when she saw him for the first time he looked like a fetus that was not ready to be born yet… that when he slept, he resembled a corpse… he didn’t have the strength to cry, cough, or barely even move…and that she wasn’t sure he would live even if they did bring him to a hospital that day. The KCM staff decided to name him Moses and took him in as their own. He has made incredible progress… everyday he is getting more color in his skin, he is eating more, they are giving him vitamins, and he is growing! The family has even began visiting him and realizing that he is a human and that he is special. The first time I held him in my hands, I was a goner… the rest of the week they called me Momma Moses # 2… I was always holding him and feeding him and changing his diapers… it was amazing! Every time I looked into his big brown eyes I just thought about how much he has already been through and tears filled my eyes as I thought about how this precious, beautiful, innocent child has to get tested on August 5 to see if he is HIV positive. Tears filled my eyes as I thought about how prominent witchcraft and child sacrifice is in this area. Tears filled my eyes as I thought about all of the malnurished babies all over the place with bellies sticking out because their muscles are too weak to hold them in. And then I thought about my sovereign God. I remembered how has already saved this baby from death. And I know that He has a purpose for Moses, that Moses already has a heart-wrenching testimony, and that the amount of love that I have for this child, God loves him a million times more and peace came over me because I know that I have a God that cares and a God that loves and a God that saves and a God that does miracles every single day and Moses is not just a reminder of God’s miracles, he IS one of God’s miracles!

Please keep the village of Kyampisi in your prayers and the KCM staff in your prayers and of course please pray that the test results on August 5 come back negative. This is just one of the absolutely amazing stories from this week. The Lord is doing very big things in that poverty stricken area and I am so blessed to have been able to be a small part of it!
