Falling in Love

So much has happened this week I don't even know where to begin. This is why I came to Africa, and it's what will bring me back.    My heart has been broken for Kyampisi, Uganda and the incredible people who live there. I guess the best I can do is summarize, and try to convey some sense of why it touched us all in a deep and lasting way.     I'll start by introducing the very first child we met at Jesus House – Alan. His full story, which you can read at kyampisi.org, will make you head spin and your heart hurt. This beautiful,...

Louder Now

1 Cor. 4:20- “For the kingdom of God does not consist in words but in power.” This is a scripture that has really manifested to me on this trip. I had an understanding before the trip of what that meant, but now I feel like God is SHOWING me what it means. It’s a one sentence verse, but what a powerful punch it packs. The Kingdom of heaven is not words, but power. Wow! we serve a God, the only true living God, who moves in power.  The other night we had a spontaneous encounter with some kids who were dancing and playing at a crusade meeting. We were going with...

Well Mom it happened..

A warning before reading: Words can’t really express what I felt in my heart this week, but I will do my best to try and convey it.    We all knew the day was going to come when I found the child I wanted to bring back home with me. What I didn’t know was how much little 7 year old Allan Ssembatya would affect me. I heard Allan’s story while we were in the car on the way to Kyampisi. I seriously could not believe what Pastor Peter was telling me and my heart was aching with emotions. When Allan was 6 years old he was walking home from school and was attacked by a...

This Is The Story of My New Little Best Friend

Shefik Katende is a five-year-old boy in top class at Kyampisi Childcare Centre. He has chubby little cheeks with dimples in them and sparkling brown eyes that, despite the sadness they’ve seen, smile all the time. He has little blue shorts, red knee socks, and black leather shoes for school that make him look like a little man (especially when he sticks his hands in his pockets). He lives with his beautiful mother, Lukia, who takes care of him and his seven other cousins and aunts in a little one-roomed brick house smaller than most American bedrooms. His innocent little eyes have...

To all the moms…

No, this is not a mother’s day blog. We just wanted all of you mothers (and fathers, of course) to know that everyone is safe and sound here on the Real Life Uganda team. Kampala- As you have all heard, there were some violent attacks at a few locations throughout the capital city of Kampala, Uganda Sunday night (if you haven’t heard, I’m sure there’s something on CNN or BBC WorldNews). However, I want to let you all know that the team that has been staying in the Kampala area were not at all effected by these attacks, and when we called them to make sure they were...

Simple Act

OK first, fore i tell my story, i gotta say that all is well in Lira. Any parent or supporters, that are especially worried should rest easier. This past friday the person we are staying with here in Lira, pastor Johson brought us to one of the schools he planted. Alot of us were really excited about this, unfortunately i wasn't one of them. Due to different circumstances, including an attack by a thorn tree earlier in the day, i was not exactly at the top of my game. When one of the kids asked to throw a frisbee with him i jumped at the chance. I usually love throwing the frisbee with...
