Frustrations

There are many things about spending time in Kenya that have been great, but I would be remiss if I only shared about the unexpected adventures, the encouraging words, and the inspiring stories that come with living in a foreign country.  This past week, we spent some time in Matayos, a village about twenty minutes by matatu (a taxi van, sort of) from our house in Busia.  Our team did some house to house evangelism with pastors as translators, and on Sunday a group of four of us (Hope, Ashlee, Melina, and myself) went to a Sunday morning service at their church.  They...

The Power We Carry as Children of God (Part 2)

The Power We Carry as Children of God (Part 2):   Luke 9:1-2 “When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them POWER and AUTHORITY to drive all demons, AND to cure diseases, AND he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God AND to heal the sick.”   Matthew 10:7-8 “As you go, preach this message, 'The Kingdom of Heaven is near.' Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.”   Why would Jesus command His disciples to do these things if He wasn't...

Freedom

The Lyrics “Jesus come take us to the foot of the cross where we have been bought. Now freedom is ours, we take it up! We take it up!”  repeated over and over and over  in my head and on my lips for the entirety of a 40 minute run I went on last week.  I wasn’t even sure where I had heard this song and why it was so stuck in my head.  I knew this song that had hijacked my mind was speaking to my heart in some way, though I couldn’t see clearly any new significance....

Who’s in better hands now?

Kenya has been a place of spiritual awakening for me. There are days where I feel like everyone is sleeping, and I'm here to awaken them. I'm in Kenya to set the captives free.  Yesterday we were doing door to door ministry in a little town called Matayos. On our last stop of the day, we came to a hut with an interesting mix of people. A Muslim woman, a Catholic woman, and a man who had not received salvation but yearned for it. I started with the man on the right of the room, and began to work my way over. He was hungry for the power, and immediately received salvation. The...

The Power We Carry as Children of God (Part 1)

Yesterday, 2/20/2011, I preached at Deliverance Church (The church we are working for in Busia). I was really nervous, because I knew it was a strong word. However, I knew I was supposed to preach it, because the Lord had woken me up, in the middle of the night, to download this message to me. Praise the Lord, it went really well, and even though I felt like throwing up the whole time, the Holy Spirit did His thing. The Power We Carry as Children of God (Part 1):   First, how do you become a child of God? When you are born into this world, you become naturally alive, but you...

Forgiven

I often find myself caught up in the past, feeling guilty, or in the moment  feeling guilty for using my time in ways our society deems “unproductive.”  As I began praying about it God revealed to me two kinds of guilt: the false guilt, or lies from the enemy, and then true guilt, when I actually have sinned and need to repent.  The truth is we are all guilty. We commit countless sins everyday. We break Gods commandments and fall into the devil’s sinful traps.    We as human beings torment ourselves with feelings of guilt. We try to find...
