Lira Sweet Lira

Last week, we had an incredible experience in Nairobi, Kenya, for our midpoint debrief. The busride there went a lot more smoothly than our initial busride–so much so that we even made it there early and on our first day we were able to go to a Nairobi mall! I cannot even recall how many tears of joy I shed that day at the sight of so many clothes, and so much ice cream and American candy. We also discovered a legitimate supermarket, complete with Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Oreos, and Nature Valley Bars. The next day in Nairobi, we went to Java House–a restaurant that we had...

Never Have I Ever…

Uganda, Africa edition! In America, I’ve never done any of these things. But in Africa, this is normal living! Started all my mornings at around 6:30 a.m. That’s what living in a room full of 4 girls will do to you. Taken freezing cold showers. Eaten only a couple of different meals on repeat. Heard someone say, “I’m coming!” and then they show up 5 hours later. Been in a place where it rains at least 5 times a week. Greeted someone with “hello!” and they respond, “I’m fine!” Become friends with everyone...

7. this is my life

Hi Everyone! So…we didn't go to the bush… yet. Some logistical things fell through and so we are hoping to go in November. We still are leaving for Nairobi on October 20th for mid-point debrief and will back in Lira October 26th. I thought I would update you some things we have done lately and give you a bit of an understanding of the culture here in Uganda. – The last day of the anniversary at Victory Church equalled a march around Lira. About 200 Africans and our team marched around the city for 2 hours. We sang praises to God and waved leafy branches. It...

Leave Your Expectations at the Door

I came to Africa expecting to make a huge impact, expecting to be the next “white missionary girl” to change the world. Coming to Uganda, I’ve realized that if anyone has been changed, and if anyone has been impacted, it has most definitely been me. The Christians here have taught me so much, and have spurred me further in my walk with Christ.               If I had to describe the Ugandan church in one word it would be joyful. It is so evident in every...

I think you are very mistaken.

Missionary life isn't everything it's always cracked up to be. I know a lot of you have been saying how jealous you are of me being in Africa, and how you wish you could be here. But in reality, do you really wish you were here?   Because i'm going to be real right now and say it is so hard being here. It's so hard being away from everything you have ever known. It's lonely, and I find my heart longing for the comfort of everything back home. I battle with my mind every single day. I fight for my heart to be here. I fight the Enemy off every single day. ...

Shuffle.

God speaks to me through my ipod.   Sometimes you have those days. Days that you spend in a rut, replaying everything in your life that you haven’t quite been able to get past. I had one of those days yesterday, 75% spent in tears and 25% percent of it trying to sleep through them. The tears of a heart that had been chewed up and spit out by countless undeserving souls. A heart that can’t forgive itself. A heart that didn’t know where to begin to fill the deep holes that riddled it.   But there is a place that only love can go.   That was the lyric that rang...
