African first

Howdy yall   I just saw my sister’s video message, listening to “i can only imagine”, i’m feeling pretty good I had my first soda in 7 years. That pretty all we have to drink other than water Had my first african bus ride. That was a experience. There was a stretch of road that, no joke, had a speed bump every 30 feet. What would have taken less than three hours in an american car on american roads took us over 5 hours. First time to see the effects of the LRA. I saw the mass grave of a village that was burnt to the ground. The feeling of being where a huge...

Hello Radio Lira…This is Katy speaking!

Yes. Somehow I have found myself the new host of a radio show here in Lira, Uganda. Preaching to about 1.5 million people all over Uganda, the Congo and Sudan from 6:30am to 6:45am. Ironic isn’t it? I, who feel like I have barely learned anything about my own faith am actually talking about my faith daily on the radio to millions of people. With a translator of course to help sort out my crazy American accent.   So, every morning thus far, I get up and try to think of something profound to say. And after trying to think my most profoundest, I...

Nancy School for the Deaf

On Tuesday, two of my teammates (Danielle and Travis) and I piled into a car with kindhearted African man named Peter, and set off for the Nancy School for the Deaf, a primary and secondary combined school at which Peter is a teacher.  Thanks to the language barrier and the “TIA” (This Is Africa; go with the flow) mentality, none of us knew quite what to expect.  The fact that none of us had much experience with special needs children, coupled with an added language barrier (African Sign Language is NOT the same as American!) only added to our nervousness. We met with...

Ready. Set. Go!

I’ve definitely always been a type B personality. I’m not a planner, schedules aren’t second nature to me and I’ve never had a hard time just going with the flow and seeing what happens. However, I am no match for Uganda. Their culture is just at such a different pace than the U.S- I’ve seen one clock since I’ve been here. Everyone is just layed back and doesn’t have an agenda. It’s refreshing to see a community just chilled out.      This past tuesday, I felt first hand how Ugandans don’t seem...

Shattered Comfort Zone

We have been in Lira for one week, and God is already moving in powerful ways. It’s been so neat to see the team just going for it all the way, and to see each of us challenge each other to go even deeper with God. People are getting plugged into ministry, whether that be hut to hut evangelism, preaching via radio waves, teaching at the school, or preaching at noon prayer. God is teaching us and growing us in so many ways it’s phenomenal.   Tuesday I had an interesting opportunity of traveling to a remote village that was the site of a former IDP camp during the war, and...

Teee Eye Aaayyy

T.I.A.   This. Is. Africa.   Forget clean clothes, feeling like you’re clean when you get out of the shower, air conditioning, reliable transportation, talking to your family, and don’t even THINK about expecting someone to be on time. This Is Africa, and every sacrifice is one-hundred percent worth it when a beautiful child smiles up at you, and you can see pure joy in their eyes.   I have been priveleged to be working this week within Fountain Primary School, a school that specializes in Christian counseling for children traumatized by the civil war. Many...
