Ten days! Ten days in Africa and it's already been mind blowing. We've had chances to minister to hundreds upon hundreds of kids; we've had chances to minister to starving and sick hospital patients; we've had chances to minister to highschool kids and younger students; we've had chances to minister to the working class of Lira; and we've had chances to minister to eachother as a team. I have learned so much about my teammates, myself, and so much about God.
There is one thing in particular I learned that has really blown my expectations out of the water. It is the Christians here in Lira. The believers here are of a sort I have never seen. Their relentless commitment to and passion for our God is so much greater than my own. Church at Victory last sunday was a good example of this. The service we attended was an early one and the sun had not risen when it started. About five minutes before the start time, the power went out. Power outages are quite frequent in Lira, but this was a particularly unfortunate time for one. There was no power for the microphones, instruments, and of course the lights. I expected them to delay or cancel the service, but did they? They certainly did not. The worship leader got up in front of the congregation (which at this time was only our team and about four others) and started the service in the dark. We prayed and praised the Lord with more passion in the dark than if everything was running smoothly.
The people of Uganda are real. They thank and praise the Lord in the face of poverty, crippling sickness, hunger, injustice, and any other hardship imaginable. We thought we were cool for coming here to serve them? We have just as much to learn from them as they have to learn from us. Praise the Lord for these people of Africa.
In Christ,
Zach Brown
