Real Football

Things are great in Uganda! I am reminded everyday of how blessed we are to be here serving our Lord.

I was thinking about football this week. I’m not talking about the kind of football where you have to buy expensive equipment and bash each other’s heads in; I’m talking about the football (we call it soccer) that brings joy and hope to so many kids here in Uganda and all over the world. Just yesterday, we were spending time at an elementary school here in Lira, just playing with the kids and praising to Lord along side them. Craig Simmons from our team had brought a new soccer ball to the school because their old one was completely destroyed. The kids were ecstatic when they saw that ball and were climbing over each other just to get a hand on it. For about an hour and a half, an epic game of “fight all odds to kick the ball” took place. It may sound like mayhem, and it was, but it gave such joy to them. These kids have next to nothing of their own so a simple soccer ball gives them all the entertainment they could ask for, even if it’s 50 or 60 kids all chasing the same ball.

After over an hour of barefoot football in the dirt and rocks, we had evening prayers. My feet were raw and blistered enough to call it an evening, but these kids were ready to play all night. I love it. We have so much to learn from the people here. Praise the Lord.

In Christ,
