Friendly neighborhood superheroes

“The last crimson streak fades from the sky. The evening moon casts
its blue light. Women and children rest their heads. Alpha sleeps. All
is quiet.

Almost…

There are some that wake late in the night. Mischief stirs and trouble
brews. Dark figures walk the streets. All of Lira sits on the brink of
chaos, everything hangs in a balance so slight. All may be lost. But
there are some who resist it.

A flash of light breaks the night, and what was once dark becomes
bright. A few, a strong few, defend this city from the terrors of the
night. They are feared by all who are evil, and loved by those who are
innocent. They are the defenders of Lira, the heroes of Uganda, the
hope of Africa. They are the Alpha Staff.

Yes indeed, we are privileged to stay under a roof of heroes. After
much deliberation, we have decided that the staff of our home, Alpha
Hotel, are in fact heroes. Their chief is called Patrick by day, and
he takes on the humble alter ego of our van driver. He is often seen
pretending to have trouble with the van in order to keep up his
innocent Patrick character. Sure, this act can delay our departure
sometimes or even cause us to walk to ministry, but it is absolutely
essential that he keeps his true identity concealed. The other heroes
put on similar acts everyday, whether it be cooking or cleaning. We
are honored to be under their care, to be watched by these mighty
saviors.

The whereabouts of Lira’s villains are not quite known. There are some
here and there that we suspect, but none are for sure. We like to
believe that it is simply because our friendly neighborhood heroes are
so good at what they do, that villains have given up on this place. It
is an adventure. We can’t know all the parts just yet. But we are
blessed to be in such good company. Who are your neighborhood heroes?
Who watches your streets as you sleep? Next time you’re out and about,
look around, people watch. Maybe YOU know some heroes too!

In Christ,
Zach Brown
