Don’t Mess with an Angel!

Ello friends and fam! Sorry for my lack of a blog last week, but I spent my entire Wednesday on a bus ride back to Uganda. The good news is that the bus ride back to Uganda was infinitely more pleasant than the ride to Kenya : ) Our bus on the way home actually had shocks on it so every bump we hit did not send us a foot into the air, lol. Also, we drove over the equator, which was really cool! I have been in two states at once, but I’ve never been on both sides of the world at the same time, so that was neat!
Anywho, once we got back to Uganda, we got a new schedule for the rest of our time here in Uganda. I am in a group with Somer and Jordan and we spend our weeks at three different places; the hospital, Child Restoration Outreach, and Victory Outreach Church North.
During our time at the hospital this past Monday, I went to the theatre, which is what they call the surgery unit here. Monday is surgery day at the hospital, so I stopped by to see if they would let me assist with any surgeries. I love that in America, this would have been a terribly stupid idea, but here in Uganda, the doctors were down with the plan. However, the head doctor said I needed permission from hospital administration. The permission would be easy to get if a doctor came with me, but alas, they were all busy with surgeries. However, Dr. Henry, one of my doctor friends, assured me that next week we will go straight away to get me permission to assist the doctors in surgery. So stay tuned for the shenanigans that will develop from that!
Throughout the rest of my time at the hospital, I went to the neo-natal intensive care unit and prayed over lots of premature ailing babies. Then I wandered over to the orthopedic unit and hung out with some awesome elderly women. All of the women had been there for weeks with broken hips. They did not speak English whatsoever, but I was somewhat able to communicate to them that I had broken my hip. I showed them my scar from the surgery and they laughed that someone so young had broken their hip. Who would have thought that breaking my hip at the age of 18 would allow me to better bond with 80 year old African women with the same ailment? God is funny, lol.
Yesterday, we spent the day at Child Restoration Outreach. CRO is an organization that takes children off the street and gives them a place to get an education, provides them with a meal, and water. I spent some time with a girl named Jackie who was teaching a few other children how to make skirts. The children learn how to sew so that they have a means to make money to support themselves in order get off of the streets. Then I met a girl named Maureen. Maureen is in a wheelchair and comes to CRO to sing with the children and speak to them of the love of the Lord. She is by far one of the most joyful people I have met during my time in Africa. She and I sat for about an hour just chatting about the Lord and singing. She writes her own songs as well, so she would sing me one of her songs and then I would sing her one of mine, and we had a great time sharing that.
As far as life at Alpha Hotel goes, the ladies that work at the hotel are obsessed with this Spanish soap opera called “Don’t Mess with an Angel”. It is literally one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen on television. It is overly dramatic and has terrible English voice-overs, but somehow, the ladies have dragged most of the girls on our team into sharing their obsession. I suppose it doesn’t hurt that there is a beautiful Spanish male lead named Juan Miguel on the show, haha. Now all the ladies, and all the girls on our team, gather almost every night at 8pm to watch Juan Miguel and Marie Choy’s star crossed lover story play out. It’s not really that I like the show, but I love the Alpha ladies and you’ve never truly experienced watching a Spanish soap opera until you watch it with a group of very animated African women.
That’s all for now! Thanks for stopping by to read! I love and miss you!

Peace and Blessins!
Sarah
