Father… what do you think of when you hear Father? Some people think of the head of a household, the one who brings home the bacon, the one who has a job. Some people even think of the strong one of a family, someone who watches over his children and raises them the right way. For those people, the word father is a good one, a word that makes them feel safe, secure, and loved.
Here in Uganda, father often means something entirely different. We see children without dads everyday, whether it’s on the streets or in the schools. Many children have never even met their dads. Others barely know their own because they were abandoned by them when they were young. Fathers here often do what they want. They get with a girl and after that, who knows. They might decide to stick around, or they might leave that girl with a child to care for all on her own. That word doesn’t mean safety and security to kids in Uganda, it means selfishness, disrespect, and abandonment.
The worst part is that it’s not only here in Uganda, or even in Africa overall. I’ve seen this in my travels to Russia and it’s abundance of orphanages. I’ve even seen it in America. It is simply a tragedy, a sinking and sickening reality in our world.
Now let me tell you about the father that we have come here to spread word about. He is THE Father! He is the ultimate provider, the strongest of his family, and the lover of his kids. He is our Father in Heaven, the Lord God Almighty. Never will he abandon his children. He is our mission, to tell Uganda and the world over that they have a father who loves them and who is waiting for their hearts. Praise the Lord.
In Christ,
