African Confusion

Well here in Africa, white people are referred to as either “Muzungu” or “Munu.” So everywhere we go, we hear “Munu, Bye, Munu, Bye.” Or “Muzungu, how are you”. Or something along those lines. English is the universal language here in Uganda but their English is definitely different and they often have a hard time understanding us. Small Children who are just learning are often confused as well. I think that in their schools they teach them that if a white person talks to you, they are probably going to ask you two questions. 1. How are you? and 2. What is your name? Here are some fairly typical conversations between a munu and an African child.

Example 1:
Munu: Hi
African Child: I’m Fine

Example 2:
Munu: How are you
African Child: My name is (insert cute African name here).

Other African Confusions:
No matter what ailments you have, you have “The Malaria”.. Your leg hurts? You have a weird rash? Your arm is bleeding? Hmm.. must be The Malaria.

“It’s not far”, really means at least 2 miles.. Which is kind of far when footing (walking)

So I realize this isn’t really anything super prophetic or anything, but just some fun things I thought I would share about Africa. Things are going good! We are going to a village this weekend called Amalitar to experience the REAL african life, we will live in huts, and cook and clean and everything with the families there.. I'm a little nervous but it should be pretty cool!! And than next Thursday, we head to Kenya for about a week (with our 20 hour bus rides in there), for a debrief with all the Passport teams that are in Africa. So the next two weeks will be a little crazy but adventurous!! They don't call it Adventures in Mission for Nothing!!

God Bless 🙂
